Liverpool edged Wrexham 1-0 in their second pre-season friendly of the summer, with Rio Ngumoha’s goal proving the difference at New York’s Yankee Stadium as Andoni Iraola continued to build his blueprint for the season ahead.

The result follows Liverpool’s 4-2 win over Sunderland in Nashville, Iraola’s first match since taking charge. This time the setting was grander and the occasion louder, with Wrexham bringing their well-documented Hollywood appeal to one of sport’s most recognisable venues.

Phil Parkinson’s side had a point to prove after narrowly missing out on the Championship play-offs last season, and they made Liverpool work for it. The margin was slim, but Ngumoha’s finish was enough to give the Reds a second straight victory on American soil.
Who stood out
Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, and Ryan Gravenberch were all back in the squad after rejoining the tour, giving Iraola more quality to work with as he starts to piece together his preferred combinations. Trey Nyoni and Kieran Morrison, who both caught the eye against Sunderland, were again in contention to impress.
Defensively, Liverpool were stretched for options. Jeremy Jacquet and Joe Gomez both missed out through injury, and with Giovanni Leoni also unavailable, Iraola is working with limited cover at centre-back for now.

Liverpool will continue their pre-season tour of the United States before the squad returns to full strength.
