A large group of Nihang Sikhs clashed with police and forced their way through security barricades at the Kulhal checkpoint on the Himachal Pradesh-Uttarakhand border late Thursday night, triggering a high alert across the state and drawing heavy police deployment to the region.
How the night unfolded
The group, numbering close to 200 and believed to have set out from Mohali in Punjab, was travelling through Himachal Pradesh when they were stopped at the Kulhal check post in Uttarakhand’s Vikasnagar area. Authorities had erected multi-layered metal barricades and positioned riot-gear police in advance, anticipating the march after Nihang groups publicly announced their intention to enter the state.

A two-hour meeting was held at the Paonta Sahib Gurdwara between police officers, district administration officials, and representatives of the Nihang group in an attempt to defuse the situation. Those talks broke down without agreement.
While some members of the group agreed to turn back, a section pushed through the barricades and continued their march toward Hemkund Sahib, one of Sikhism’s most sacred pilgrimage sites located in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district.
What sparked the standoff
The border confrontation traces back to a dispute between Nihang Sikhs and local residents in Karnaprayag, also in Chamoli district, which had already put authorities on edge. A separate incident at the Nagrasu gurdwara added to the tension in the days before Thursday’s events.
Four Nihang members were arrested in connection with the Karnaprayag incident. The group at the border made their demand clear: they would not leave Uttarakhand until those four individuals are released and can travel back to Punjab with them.
Security tightened across the state
The Uttarakhand administration placed the entire state on high alert following the breach, with particular concern about additional Nihang groups potentially entering from Himachal Pradesh. Visuals from the Kulhal-Vikasnagar border showed the checkpoint converted into what officials described as a heavily fortified zone, with police in riot gear stationed behind layered barricades.
Superintendent of Police (Rural) Pankaj Gairola confirmed to reporters that a section of the protesters had breached the barricades. Heavy police deployment was also reported in Dehradun as a precaution.
The situation remained tense as of Friday, with authorities monitoring movement along the border and the fate of the four detained Nihang members at the center of any possible resolution.
